How water inspired a photoshoot | Calgary Family Photography
Water at sunset can be simply magical. Water, light, soft colours and a sense of calm were words that this family emphatically described over and over when listing to me what she wanted to capture in a recent photoshoot. Sometimes people come to me with a theme or an idea that they want to capture - and having this can help plan the perfect shoot. Peaceful, peach, soft, and sparkly were important. In finding just the right location, creating the mood and guiding people into connected moments, we can make those themes become a reality.
knowing what you want to do with the photos can help guide the session
we take our cues from the environment
The sound of water ranges from barely heard whispers to overwhelming bursts of sound. The trickle of a stream into the lakes followed by the lapping of the waves on a shore, to the powerful surge of a raging river ending in the crescendo of a waterfall. Water has a way of telling us in life that things are forever moving and changing. Purifying, clean, strong, powerful. Water at its essence is something we all need. Go beyond that to harness its strength and it delves into a power like any other. From throwing rocks, to sitting and watching the sun set, to playing hide and seek, I let the family and the environment guide us into the session. Never forced or overly posed, I aim to capture who you are as you are now.
Shooting when the sun rises or sets is called golden hour
We all know how amazing a sunset or sunrise can be. Shooting at this hour - an hour before the sun rises or sets can lend incredible light to photographs and provide a magical and ethereal quality to the images. It isn't as late as people think and depending on the location we pick it can happen earlier due to horizon lines. My job is to know this and get us there on time. Then...the magic happens. Families with small children usually manage this by having kids rest later in the day and have a good snack before they come. Sunset photos are some of my favourites.

Water has a way of telling us in life that things are forever moving and changing. But for all the water there is, the light coupled with this amazing life source elevates the experience of being outside to one of magical - dare I say - unicorn quality... To you who strives through life, washing over the water and gliding with the light, I wish for you the best that life now brings.
capturing connection - they are only little once
Capturing their growing up yet still small enough to be enveloped in mama's arms, it was key to freeze these seemingly sparse moments in time. Coming ready to be photographed is one thing, hoping to capture the authentic feeling that is within your family is another. Creating connected moments in photography takes practice and skill. Together we'll create and guide you into moments that are natural and unique to you reflecting who you are within the fabric of your family's life. It needn't feel forced or contrived, we'll find what works for you.
The light and the water teach me something Every, Single. Time. I do this. And this time was no different. Daring to be great takes courage, strength and the grace of many. This time is no exception. Water is magic. The light is transformative and the lessons learned through it all as it washes away, renews and invigorates is that the world we live in is pretty spectacular. The village within it even more so. We managed to hit the high notes on this one, and I can't wait to see what the finished product looks like on the walls of this family's home.
To a family who continues to demonstrate an undeniable sense of love and compassion, who strive to be the best that they can be and who showed up ready to be within the incredible space that was our canvas for the night.....I thank you. xoxo K.
